Tim & Gabriel each designed a range of beach houses – to be prefabricated and transported to the island. All the houses are to be completely self sustaining (as well as sustainable) – including water supply and electricity.
Keswick Island in general is a very special natural environment with large areas that are and will remain untouched. The Beach House site is the one area of the island designated to take higher density development - it had been severely degraded through previous usage.
Architecturally it was a difficult site to deal with, sloping steeply in two directions: to the south and to the west. Each house is designed to maintain views of the western ridge of Basil Bay and toward the water. With the prevailing winds blowing strongly from different directions at different times of the year, but often for days or weeks a time, we provided decks at each end of the house. This will allow year round outdoor living.
